ADVANCED LEVEL POSITIONS

Advanced level positions are a great way to gain the highest amount of student responsibility within the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certfications will be required for employment. Advanced level positions will also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. Applicants must be well spoken, comfortable with supervising peers, and proficient writers. All advanced level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Head Lifeguard - Minneapolis Aquatic Center

Job Description
The Lifeguard at the Minneapolis Aquatic Center is responsible for overseeing the safety of pool patrons while swimming and utilizing the pool area.  Patrons range from youth swimming lesson participants to community, faculty and staff members. The Aquatic Center pool facility includes one Olympic size, 8 lane lap pool that is 7.5 feet deep and includes a moveable bulk head, 17 ft. deep diving well with spring boards and platforms, Cooke 10 therapy pool 3.5 ft deep, and Cooke 15 lap pool. The lifeguard at the Minneapolis facility will guard for a wide variety of user groups from youth swimming and diving lessons to Olympic and International Swimming Events. This position includes but is not limited to the following job duties:

  • Assist in training, hiring, and management of 30-40 lifeguards per semester.
  • Maintain a safe and clean swimming environment for pool patrons and staff. 
  • Communicate regularly with Aquatic Program and Event Manager and Director.
  • Communicate orally and in writing to lifeguards on staff and patrons.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by Aquatic Program Manager, Aquatic Event Manager, and Aquatic Director.
  • Coordinate and organize in-services, meetings, safety week, online sub board, special event shifts. 
  • Assist in payroll operations.
  • Lifeguard for empty or missed shifts.
  • Coordinate monthly schedule with Events Manager.
  • Assist in special event coverage.
  • Monitor and document staff workouts, write ups, pool usage, and merit point system.

Job Requirements
The Head Lifeguard must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR-PRO, AED, and First Aid Certifications. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and some early mornings (depending upon school schedule).
  • Previous experience lifeguarding and or head lifeguarding
  • Ability to lift and move bleachers
  • Submit resume, cover letter, and two references
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and or Water Safety Instructor Trainer certifications preferred.
  • Strong Oral and written Communication Skills

Learn to Swim Coordinator - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Learn to Swim coordinator is a supervisory position handling the administrative duties for the Learn to Swim program at the University of Minnesota.  This position works closely with the Aquatic Program Manager.  Classes take place at both the St. Paul and Minneapolis aquatic facilities and cater to the needs of 355 participants every seven weeks.  This position includes but is not limited to the following job duties:

  • Communicate daily with the Aquatic Program Director
  • Communicate orally or via email with the Senior Instructors (SI’s), Water Safety Instructors, and Head Lifeguards
  • Creating new activity and training manuals.
  • Organizing and Facilitating the LTS registration process.
  • Managing the point system for merit based raises.
  • Updating certifications and handling Red Cross forms.
  • Assisting with management of the private lesson program and online student group.
  • Answering phone calls and emails regarding registration for both group and private lessons.
  • Assist in updating program materials, policies and procedures, running staff in-services.
  • Other duties as assigned by Aquatic Program Manager. 

Job Requirements
The Learn to Swim Coordinator must be certified in or willing to obtain the American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction (WSI), CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Experience in teaching swimming classes and individuals of various ages and ability levels.
  • Background check is required with this position
  • Ability to perform duties of Senior Instructor or Water Safety Instructor
  • Lifeguard Instructor or Water Safety Instructor Certifications desired but not required.
