ADVANCED LEVEL POSITIONS

Advanced level positions are a great way to gain the highest amount of student responsibility within the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certfications will be required for employment. Advanced level positions will also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. Applicants must be well spoken, comfortable with supervising peers, and proficient writers. All advanced level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Fitness Management Program Assistant - Minneapolis

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Fitness Management Program Assistant position.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Coordinator, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Serve as liaison between the fitness coordinator and fitness attendant staff
  • Assist the fitness coordinator with the daily operations of the Minneapolis fitness centers.  Enforce all fitness-related policies and procedures.  Execute risk management plan.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and assist in the evaluation 30-40 fitness attendant staff
  • Organize and manage all fitness attendant staff meetings.  Coordinate continuing education workshops.  
  • Verify fitness attendant payroll at the end of each payperiod.  Keep records. 
  • Maintain fitness activity areas inventory.   Making recommendations for fitness center purchasing.  
  • Serve as liaison between the fitness attendant staff and equipment technician staff

Job Requirements
To be eligible for hire applicant must have been employed within the fitness program for at least two academic semesters, serving in at least one of the following capacities:  fitness attendant, fitness specialist or personal trainer.

All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota.
  • Able to work about 10-20 hours per week

Personal Training Program Assistant - Minneapolis

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Personal Training Program Assistant position.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the fitness assessment and personal training program at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym locations.  Serve as liaison between the fitness director and personal training staff
  • Instruct an 8-week in-house personal training course to prepare students for possible employment within the fitness program. 
  • Instruct 6- and 8-week group strength classes.  Assist with the training and evaluation of group strength instructors.
  • Assist the fitness director with recruiting, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of personal training staff
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department for the timely communication and distribution of personal training-related programs and services. 
  • Execute fitness assessment testing based on the 5 components of fitness and exercise program design.  Design exercise programs for a variety of participants utilizing the fitness program by combining individual health and fitness goals with fitness assessment results.
  • Execute fitness-related special events:   body composition screenings, Healthy Matters events, workshops, health fairs, as well as University employee and Twin Cities community-based events. 
  • Respond to participants’ questions and comments by utilizing the fitness program’s e-mail database.  Enter participant data into departmental database(s).
  • Maintain assessment and personal training equipment inventory.   Make recommendations for future assessment and personal training program purchases

Group Fitness Program Assistant - Minneapolis

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Group Fitness Program Assistant position.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the group fitness program at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym locations.  Serve as liaison between the fitness director, group fitness graduate assistant and group fitness instructor staff
  • Assist the graduate assistant with the instruction of the 8-week group fitness instructor training (GFIT) course to prepare students for possible employment within the fitness program. 
  • Assist the graduate assistant with recruiting, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of group fitness instructor staff, including mind/body instructors
  • Assist with the planning and release of the group fitness schedule, to include 80+ classes per week for both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department for the timely communication and distribution of group fitness-related programs and services. 
  • Execute group fitness-related workshops and special events serving students, faculty/staff at the University of Minnesota, and in some instances, the Twin Cities community
  • Respond to participants’ questions and comments by utilizing the fitness program’s e-mail database.  Enter participant data into departmental database(s).  Keep records.
