ADVANCED LEVEL POSITIONS

Advanced level positions are a great way to gain the highest amount of student responsibility within the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certfications will be required for employment. Advanced level positions will also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. Applicants must be well spoken, comfortable with supervising peers, and proficient writers. All advanced level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Head Member Service Representative

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Head Member Service Representative position. The Head Member Service Representative will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting Senior Member Service Specialist in the creation and maintenance of Member Service Representative training materials
  • Assisting Senior Member Service Specialist with administrative tasks such as organization and management of membership forms, preparing student employee timecards, updating student employee schedules and contact lists
  • Serving as the main point of contact for Member Service office while Professional Staff members are not on site
  • Leading Member Service staff meetings
  • Reconciling the cash drawer and preparing daily deposits
  • Maintaining and updating the Member Service Memo Book to keep Member Service Representatives up to date on policies and procedures in the department.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota
  • Able to work about 15 hours per week
  • Previous Customer Service experience
  • Sales experience preferred

Membership Intern

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill our Membership Intern position. This position entails working directly with the Membership Coordinator to effectively communicate with the department’s current and potential members. The membership intern will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Working with the Membership Coordinator to create and implement a departmental customer service program.
  • Working with the Membership Coordinator to create a membership recruitment and retention program.
  • Writing the monthly member newsletter
  • Tracking usage rates in the University Recreation Center and St. Paul Gymnasium and making suggestions for possible ways to promote different departmental programs.
  • Representing the Department of Recreational Sports at information fairs and assisting with the planning of the annual Rec Sports Spring Wellness Fair.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a student of the University of Minnesota Twin – Cities
  • Be willing to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week
  • Must be able to provide writing sample to be reviewed by the Membership and Marketing Coordinator

Marketing Intern

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Marketing Intern position.  This position entails working directly with the Marketing Coordinator to effectively communicate with the department’s current and potential patrons.  The Marketing Intern will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Working with the Marketing Coordinator to create and implement a departmental marketing plan.
  • Working with the Marketing Coordinator to create a media kit for advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Assisting with the planning of various special events occurring within the department such as indoor triathlons, wellness fairs, and intramural events.
  • Selling ad space to target businesses.  
  • Representing the Department of Recreational Sports at information fairs.
  • Working with the graphic design team to ensure that all publications meet specific branding guidelines.
  • Maintaining the department’s bulletin boards as a marketing and information tool.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the deparment upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota
  • Able to work about 15 hours per week
  • Must also provide a recent writing sample to be reviewed by the Marketing Coordinator.

Graphic Design Intern

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Graphic Design Intern position. This position will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Be efficient with the operation of computer design tools, including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Produce graphic designs for brochures, advertisements, posters, billboards, flyers, and other publications.
  • Ensure all design requests are well designed and completed by deadline.
  • Work with the Marketing Coordinator and other department staff to develop innovative designs.
  • Have understanding of various page layouts.
  • Keep regular office hours.
  • Work well with others and be flexible in design strategies.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a student of the University of Minnesota Twin – Cities
  • Be willing to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week
  • Must be able to demonstrate previous experience in design
  • Must have completed Graphic Design 1 or be enrolled in or competed Graphic Design 2.

Historical Archive Intern

Background Information
The Department of Recreational Sports (DRS) is interested in depicting its past, present, and future endeavors by displaying historical artifacts, documents, and photos throughout the University Recreation Center and St. Paul Gymnasium. The history of the department, whose past dates back to the 1920’s, will include such information as the addition of the University Aquatic Center and the University Recreation Center in the early 1990’s and the department’s plans for future facility improvements. This student position will begin as soon as it is filled and is will conclude at the end of the fall 2008 semester.

Job Description
This is a part-time student position that reports to the Department of Recreational Sports Membership and Marketing Coordinator. This position is designed to collect and appropriately archive relevant DRS artifacts. Duties include:

  • Working with the Membership and Marketing Coordinator and DRS Historical Display Committee to develop an action plan for the physical layout of all DRS Historical Display materials
  • Researching and making recommendations for the purchase and installation of an archiving technology system which will include paper to electronic data scanning and storage of departmental data
  • Developing an organizational structure of the archive system and a plan for the collection and storage non-electronic artifacts
  • Training appropriate staff members on the archiving technology system
  • Performing various tasks such as scanning documents and photos to be placed into a DRS archiving system
  • Creating a plan for the continued tracking of events and significant achievements taking place in each departmental program area

Alumni Database Intern

Background Information
The Department of Recreational Sports (DRS) is currently laying the foundations for an alumni relations and development program. This position has been created to assist in the collection and recording of relevant information for past Rec Sports employees and program participants. This student position will begin as soon as it is filled and is will conclude at the end of the fall 2008 semester.

Job Description
This is a part-time student position that reports to the Department of Recreational Sports Director of Marketing and Development. This position is designed to collect and appropriately record Rec Sports alumni information. Duties include:

  • Working with the Director of Marketing and Development to develop database standards and effective work processes
  • Working with appropriate DRS staff to access and collect past employee and participant records
  • Inputting all records into database

Web Design Intern

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is seeking a web development/graphic design intern. The position requires knowledge in both website and publication design. Specifically, the web development/graphic designer will be expected to:

  • Be efficient with the operation of computer design tools, including GoLive, Dreamweaver and Adobe Creative Suite CS3
  • Maintain and improve the Department of Recreational Sports website in accord with the department’s identity system
  • Assist in the production of graphic designs for brochures, advertisements, posters, billboards, flyers, and other publications
  • Ensure all requests are well designed and completed by deadline
  • Work with the Marketing and Membership Coordinator and other department staff to develop innovative design
  • Have understanding of various page layouts
  • Keep regular office hours
  • Work well with others and be flexible in design strategies
