INTERMEDIATE LEVEL POSITIONS

Intermediate level positions are a great way to take on more responsibility with the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certifications may be required for employment. Intermediate level positions may also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. All intermediate level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Senior Instructor - Learn to Swim Program - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
This position is primarily responsible for facilitating the needs of swimming instructors and parents, troubleshooting problems, answering questions, and making basic decisions regarding safety and communication during the specific assigned learn to swim session.  The Senior Instructor will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Informing the Learn to Swim Coordinators and Aquatic Program Manager of any issues that arise during that specific learn to swim session.
  • Relaying necessary information to learn to swim instructors, students, and parents.
  • Attend monthly meeting with Learn to Swim Coordinators, fellow SI’s, and Aquatic Program Manager.
  • Observe swimming instructors during their lessons to ensure quality instruction.  
  • Answer any questions related to the learn to swim program.
  • Instruct swimming lessons when necessary.
  • Transporting learn to swim instructors if and when necessary.
  • Assist with filling out report cards and Red Cross Addendums.

Job Requirements
The Senior Instructor must be certified by the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction (WSI), CPR, AED, and First Aid. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work nights or weekends
  • Experience in teaching swimming classes
  • Background check is required with this position

Water Aerobics Instructor - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Water Aerobics is responsible for overseeing the safety of water aerobics patrons while instructing a dynamic, safe, and constructive hour long water aerobics class.  Classes vary from pre/post natal water aerobics, generalized water aerobics, and deep water running. This position includes but is not limited to the following job duties:

  • Constructing safe activities and routines targeting water aerobics exercise.
  • Maintaining a dynamic and personable attitude while instructing patrons of college, community, and faculty/staff age range.
  • Answer health and fitness related questions in regards to exercise and aerobics in water at chest level.
  • Instruct classes at either or both the St. Paul Gym Pool or Minneapolis Aquatic Facilities. 

Job Requirements
The Water Aerobics Instructor should maintain certification in ACE group personal training or have previous experience instructing Water Aerobics or advanced exercise classes.  Be comfortable instructing groups of 10 or more individuals.  Must be certified in CPR-PRO, AED, and First Aid Certifications. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work nights and some early mornings
  • Knowledge of fitness and exercise related topics
  • WSI or LG certifications preferred

Water Safety Instructor - Learn to Swim Program - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
This position is responsible for instructing participants in the University of Minnesota Learn to Swim program.  Participants in this program vary in age from infant beginner to adult experienced.  The University of Minnesota Learn to Swim program instructs an average of 355 participants every seven weeks.  The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the following duties:

  • Instruct learn to swim participants while following American red Cross Learn to Swim Guidelines.
  • Evaluate all students in their assigned class (ie. Report cards, mid session reports, Addendums). 
  • Attend end of session meetings and in services as scheduled.
  • Maintain professional, mature, and positive teaching style while instructing.  
  • Answer any questions related to the progress of individual students.
  • Instruct private lessons as assigned by the LTS coordinators and or Aquatic Program Manager.

Job Requirements
The Water Safety Instructor must be certified by the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction (WSI), CPR, AED, and First Aid. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends
  • Experience in teaching swimming classes and individuals of various ages and ability levels.

Lifeguard - Minneapolis Aquatic Center

Job Description
The Lifeguard at the Minneapolis Aquatic Center is responsible for overseeing the safety of pool patrons while swimming and utilizing the pool area.  Patrons range from youth swimming lesson participants to community, faculty and staff members. The Aquatic Center pool facility includes one Olympic size, 8 lane lap pool that is 7.5 feet deep and includes a moveable bulk head, 17 ft. deep diving well with spring boards and platforms, Cooke 10 therapy pool 3.5 ft deep, and Cooke 15 lap pool. The lifeguard at the Minneapolis facility will guard for a wide variety of user groups from youth swimming and diving lessons to Olympic and International Swimming Events. This position includes but is not limited to the following job duties:

  • Work alone or paired with other lifeguards in an aquatic environment.
  • Maintain a safe and clean swimming environment for pool patrons. 
  • Prevent injuries, eliminate hazards, activate Emergency Action Plans, and render emergency care within the scope of your training.
  • Enforce all pool rules and regulations.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by Head lifeguards, Aquatic Program Manager, Aquatic Event Manager, and Aquatic Director.
  • Attend in-services, meetings, safety week, check online sub board, and sub for special event shifts. 
  • Maintain a level of personal fitness to perform all duties associated with being a lifeguard.
  • Ability to work doorguard shifts.

Job Requirements
The St. Paul Lifeguard must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR-PRO, AED, and First Aid Certifications. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and some early mornings (depending upon school schedule).
  • Successfully complete pre-interview skills test, and interview
  • Ability to lift and move bleachers

Event Technician - Minneapolis Aquatic Center

Job Description
The Event Technician at the Minneapolis Aquatic Center is responsible for the routine care, maintenance, and management of all Aquatic Center computer and electronic equipment including (sound systems, score boards, and timing equipment). The event technician is present at all Aquatic Center Events which include programs and events from the age group swimming level, to the College, Olympic and Paralympic caliber.  The University of Minnesota Aquatic Center is an Olympic sized natatorium with 8 lanes and a diving well.   This position includes but is not limited to the following job duties:

  • Knowledge of or experience working in the aquatic arena.
  • Problem solve, maintain level head, and ability to work in high stress situations. 
  • Event preparation and setup including pool configuration, timing system, public address systems, scoreboard and meet management computers.
  • Troubleshoot operational problems during events
  • Light building maintenance and repair
  • Inventory management and inspection/cleaning schedules  
  • Any additional duties as assigned by the Aquatic Event Manager or Aquatic Director. 

Job Requirements
The desired event tech should have a background in aquatics, events, and or computers.  CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are desired.  Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and some early mornings (depending upon pool and event schedule).
  • Ability to lift and move bleachers along with some heavy lifting
