ADVANCED LEVEL POSITIONS

Advanced level positions are a great way to gain the highest amount of student responsibility within the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certfications will be required for employment. Advanced level positions will also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. Applicants must be well spoken, comfortable with supervising peers, and proficient writers. All advanced level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Summer Camp Counselor

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Summer Camp Counselor position. The qualified applicant will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Provide youth with a safe environment for playing and learning. 
  • Supervise and participate with groups of youth ages 5-15 in a variety of activities. 
  • Be an ambassador for the University of Minnesota and Youth Programs. 
  • Interact and relate with youth.  Plan activities for down times.
  • Daily set-up, daily clean up, transportation
  • Work with co-workers to ensure a safe and enjoyable recreational experience for the youth attending the program.  
  • Assist with other assigned duties.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience working youth ages 5-15. 
  • Completion of all staff training (approx. 20 hours). 
  • Experience implementing youth activities and supervising youth in groups of 8 to 20. 
  • Willing to swim & play with youth. 
  • Must be flexible, creative and articulate. 
  • Must be available for the entire summer – vacation time is NOT guaranteed. 
  • Must be available for staff training

Summer Program Assistant

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Summer Program Assistant position. The qualified applicant will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Assist in the management of the school year enrichment classes – including staff supervision, marketing and program planning.
  • Primarily responsible for the registration/confirmation process for Summer program registrants.
  • Assisting with development and implementation of program plans.
  • Assisting with developing and managing annual operating budgets.
  • Assist in the recruiting, selecting, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating of    
  •      program coordinators, group leaders, and instructors.
  • Representing the department on University committees.
  • Attending department meetings and workshops.
  • Involvement in professional associations.
  • Involvement in community organizations that enhance UYCP’s visibility in the community and that add to it’s recognition as a leader in youth programming.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Experience working with parents
  • Experience with basic Office Suite applications such as Word, Excel, and Publisher.
  • Past experience with the Summer Youth Program preferred.
