INTERMEDIATE LEVEL POSITIONS

Intermediate level positions are a great way to take on more responsibility with the Department of Recreational Sports. A sound knowledge of departmental policies, programs and procedures combined with specific qualities and certifications may be required for employment. Intermediate level positions may also require a prospective employee to give specific examples of his/her qualifications for the position. All intermediate level positions require student employees to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already posess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired.
Personal Trainer - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Personal Trainer position.  Personal trainers can serve both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Execute fitness assessment testing based on the 5 components of fitness and exercise program design.  Design exercise programs for a variety of participants utilizing the fitness program by combining individual health and fitness goals with fitness assessment results.
  • Instruct 6- and 8-week group strength classes.  Instruct and educate participants with varying skill levels, focusing on strength training, progression and the safe execution of exercises. 
  • Execute fitness-related special events:   body composition screenings, Healthy Matters events, workshops, health fairs, as well as University employee and Twin Cities community-based events. 

Job Requirements
Complete the fitness program’s 8-week fitness specialist training course.  Pass both the written and practical exam with a grade of 80 %+.  Must actively seek certification upon hiring, and must possess certification within 6 months of hiring.  Certifications from the following organizations will be accepted:  ACE, ACSM, NSCA

If applicant has not completed the fitness program’s 8-week fitness specialist training course, must possess a personal trainer certification from one of the following organizations to be eligible for hire:  ACE, ACSM, NSCA

All fitness program employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Applicants are eligible for hire regardless of student status at the University.  Community and outside applicants welcome.
  • Able to work about 10-15 hours per week

Group Fitness Instructor - Aerobics - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Group Fitness Instructor (Aerobics) position.  Group Fitness Instructors can serve both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Instruct aerobic-based group fitness classes to students and faculty/staff.  Formats offered by the fitness program include, but are not limited to, step, boxing, cardio, dance, strength and conditioning.
  • Educate participants on proper and safe exercise form. 
  • Enforce policies and procedures in group fitness activity areas.  Execute risk management plan.
  • Attend continuing education workshops offered by the fitness program.

Job Requirements

Complete the fitness program’s 8-week group fitness instructor training (GFIT) course. 

If applicant has not completed the fitness program’s 8-week group fitness instructor training (GFIT) course, must possess a group fitness instructor certification from one of the following organizations to be eligible for hire:  ACE, AFAA

All fitness program employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

Group Fitness Instructor - Yoga/Pilates - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Group Fitness Instructor (Yoga and/or Pilates) position.  Group Fitness Instructors can serve both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Instruct 1-hour long yoga classes.  Formats offered by the fitness program include, but are not limited to, Kundalini, Yoga Flow, Hatha, and FitYoga®
  • Educate participants on proper and safe exercise form. 
  • Enforce policies and procedures in group fitness activity areas.  Execute risk management plan.
  • Attend continuing education workshops offered by the fitness program.

Job Requirements

Applicant must have paid experience working as yoga and/or pilates instructor. 

All fitness program employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Applicants are eligible for hire regardless of student status at the University.  Community and outside applicants welcome.
  • Audition required to be eligible for hire.
  • Able to work about 3-8 hours per week.

Group Fitness Instructor - Indoor Cycling - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Group Fitness Instructor (Yoga and/or Pilates) position.  Group Fitness Instructors can serve both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Instruct indoor cycling classes.  Additional formats offered by the fitness program include, but are not limited to, endurance-based and advanced indoor cyclist classes.
  • Educate participants on proper and safe exercise form. 
  • Enforce policies and procedures in group fitness activity areas.  Execute risk management plan.
  • Attend continuing education workshops offered by the fitness program.

Job Requirements

Complete the fitness program’s 8-week indoor cycling instructor training course. 

If applicant has not completed the fitness program’s 8-week indoor cycling instructor training course, must have paid experience as indoor cycling instructor, or possess an indoor cycling instructor certification to be eligible for hire.

All fitness program employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

Equipment Technician - Minneapolis and St. Paul

Job Description
The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for a qualified individual to fill the Equipment Technician position.  This position is directly supervised by the Fitness Director, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for daily maintenance of fitness equipment in the fitness activity areas at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Gym facilities.  Fitness equipment include both cardiovascular, selectorized, free weight and indoor cycling equipment.
  • Schedule and execute weekly, monthly and annual preventative maintenance.  Keep records.  Maintain workshop inventory
  • Assist with communication between the fitness program and equipment vendors, purchasing parts, warranty related information, annual fitness equipment replacement and risk management.

Job Requirements
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Minnesota.
