Fitness Assessment Services

Fitness Assessment

Our Fitness Assessment service assesses the 5 components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. Results obtained from the fitness assessment provide an accurate measure of your current fitness level. Regular assessments are a great way to track change over time. Our fitness staff will compare your results to peers in your age group, using guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Body Composition

Body composition refers to the relative percentage of body weight that is fat mass vs. lean muscle mass. At the Department of Recreational Sports, we offer two different methods of measuring body composition.

Skinfold Measurements

The principle behind this technique, performed with a skin-fold caliper, is that the amount of subcutaneous fat is proportional to the total amount of body fat we have. Fat distribution varies greatly with gender, age and ethnicity, making it even more important for participants to know their body fat percentage. Our fitness staff will compare your results to peers in your age group, using guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

This method involves the passing of a small electric current (absolutely painless) through the body and measuring the impedance or resistance to the current’s flow. Fat-free tissue is a good conductor of electrical current, whereas fat is not. Accurate BIA measurements are highly dependent on the hydration level of the participant, so certain criteria exist for the accurate measurement of body fat percentage using this method. The fitness staff will inform you of these criteria in advance.

Metabolic Testing

During this test, the body is subjected to increasing exercise levels. The Cardio Coach® measures metabolic performance at each of these levels. This information, coupled with heart rates collected throughout the test, will allow our personal trainers to calculate target intensity zones. Exercising within those specific zones will optimize your workout with fewer injuries, less fatigue and less pain.
