Ages 5 to 15

Experience programs that provide a unique challenge for learning more about yourself and your community. Take this opportunity to increase your awareness of you and your surroundings through a series of challenging and enriching activities.

Drawing

Do you think drawing means only pencil and paper? Think again! In this class, the focus will be on fun and experimentation as we try new materials and techniques while learning fundamentals such as line and value. You’ll explore various media, including ink, subtractive drawing, and simple charcoal studies. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the drawings of well known artists through slides and class discussion. No experience necessary!

Painting – New Instructor!

Have you always wanted to learn to paint, but don’t know where to start? Summers the perfect time to pick up your brushes and give it a try! In this action packed class, you’ll learn basics like brush handling, and color mixing in a fun, friendly environment. By working from observation and your imagination, you’ll create several finished paintings to take home. We’ll paint outside and you will give abstract painting a try! You will also learn about the paintings of well known artists through slides and class discussion. No experience necessary.

The Art of Magic

Everyone loves magic! Amaze people with what you can do with a deck of cards, a handful of coins, and other magical things. Make things appear and disappear, predict the future and read people’s minds! It is strongly recommended that the student be able to hold, shuffle and deal a Bridge-size deck of cards.

Sound Recording

Have you ever dreamed about being a rock star? Or do you find yourself singing along to your favorite songs on the radio and playing air guitar when no one is looking? If so, sound recording is for you! Taught in one of the top recording facilities in Minneapolis, this program focuses on learning how musician’s record hit CDs. All participants will have the opportunity to play instruments, record, and produce their own CD compilations! Prior musical experience is beneficial but not required. This program is offered in cooperation with Static Free Productions.

Devising Theatre

This class gives you an opportunity to experience how storytellers, actors, directors, and other artists work together to create theatre. Rather than producing a prescripted show, you will work collaboratively to generate your own performance about ideas that are interesting and important to you. Along the way you will learn skills and tools of theatre, including personal storytelling, staging, and writing. Perhaps most importantly, you will increase your collaboration skills as you work with others to create a performance. Parents and friends are encouraged to attend the Friday class for a sharing of the week’s work. No prior theatre experience is necessary.

Creative Writing

Explore the gifts that creative writing has to offer! From poetry to prose, this class will focus on skills that will tap into imagination and personality. Particular focus will be paid to imagery, form and other poetry devices that will be displayed in a personal writing journal. Classroom exercises will range from lessons on art, poetry and human behavior. Particular attention will be given to the classroom environment to encourage expression and support from peers. A final culmination will result in the “Coffeehouse Poetry Slam” where students will share their works with others – PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND THE FRIDAY CLASS! No experience is necessary for this class.

Metal Arts

Explore the world of artistic metal working! In this beginning-level course, you will have an opportunity to create sculptural projects with basic metal fabrication and finishing techniques. You’ll learn the benefits and limitations of each material while exploring surface, cutting and bending tools. Discover creative uses for scrap metal as we discuss metal identification methods and learn how to prepare surfaces for aesthetic and protective finishing treatments. Through hands-on experience and demonstration of the spectrum of possibilities available through further study of welding, this class will provide the basic tools to inspire the metal artists of the future. No experience necessary, and all materials and safety equipment are provided. This program is provided in cooperation with the Minneapolis Community & Technical College Continuing Education Department. A MCTC waiver is required for participation.

Musical Theater

Campers will explore musical theater-style dance including ballet, jazz, and character. Your child will have fun investigating the elements of a Broadway-style show as a performer no matter what their level of experience is! We will dance, view classic musical theater chore-ography, tour a theater, and cultivate our own “show” in the spirit of High School Musical to present to parents at the end of the week. This program is offered through cooperation with Ballareteatro Dance Theater.

Creative Dance

No shoes required- just bring your imagination to this dance class! Your little mover will delight in creating movement themselves as we explore the dynamics of movement in a fun, age-appropriate class. Interspersed with games and storytelling, we will jump, wiggle, roll, and dance our way into an informal piece to present to parents at the end of the week. This class is perfect for children of any experience level. This program is offered through cooperation with Ballareteatro Dance Theater.

Jazz Dance Week

Jazz, Hip-Hop, Jazz Funk: where did it all come from? Your camper will get to sample each of these styles of dance while learning the history of Jazz dance in a fun, non-competitive envi-ronment. Dancers of all experience levels will benefit from working on Jazz technique, explor-ing the history of Jazz dance and music, and trying out contemporary Hip-Hop and Jazz Funk. Each day we will focus on a different idiom and view choreography from each. The week will culminate in a showing and presentation by the campers for parents. This program is offered through cooperation with Ballareteatro Dance Theater.

Ever thought about the design of the store that sells your iPod or hockey equipment, or the restaurant that you beg your parents to take you to? Now is your chance to design the retail space of your dreams! Use your creativity to design a retail store to sell your favorite food, product, or activity while you learn about a real designer’s daily activities and how all kinds of places are designed—like schools, hotels, offices, hospitals, and homes.

Emerging leaders – New Class!

If George Washington had gone to camp, he would have chosen this one! Emerging Leaders is a new camp designed to help young people to challenge themselves, understand their potential, and learn how to better communicate their goals and ideas. Tours, service projects, teambuilding, interactive leaning and discussions with engaging University leaders round out this camp. So whether it’s getting into Harvard, being elected to your student counsel or becoming president of the United States; learn what it takes at Emerging Leaders camp!
